Modern Spin on Milk Glass

I recently saw this collection of white porcelain vases on Pinterest.  These similar-but-different containers immediately caught my eye, a great mixture of size and texture.  Inspired one could assume from antique pieces of milk glass, this new collection differs only in its apparent matte texture vs. the somewhat translucent quality vintage pieces have.  This set is priced appx $75. 

While in Mississippi this weekend, I came across a couple of vintage milk glass pieces I found interesting.  The goblet pictured below was $6 and the compote $1.5.  Milk glass can be a tricky thing to incorporate into your decor.  It can be a fresh and beautiful addition, but only when done tastefully.  Far too easily it could go from chic to granny.  I plan to pick up pieces from time to time at yard and estate sales with the goal of having ten to twelve by December to use in a holiday party tablescape full of these white containers filled with flowers and candy!

Tag Sale This Saturday: My Stuff!!

As you know from former posts, I am prepping for the upcoming move into my new digs.  Uncovering formerly loved pieces and making piles of things that I simply won't have space for, things I bought and thought 'hey that's cute' and never used, or things that don't fit the style of my new place has been a monumental task, but one that I've needed to do for some time.  What does that mean for you?  A fabulous opportunity to come to my yard sale!  

My friend Terri has so generously agreed to host the sale in her adorable front yard this weekend, so swing on over to East Nashville this Saturday to discover unique finds in this one-of-a-kind moving sale. Funky vintage pieces, 20th & 19th century antiques, rugs, dishes, lamps, mirrors, boxes, linens, decorate items and lots more!

Repurposed: Dishes To Mirror

My visits to Mississippi never disappoint.  I love visiting with my huge family, catching up with old friends, enjoying southern food and always finding fun new things around my parents' place.  My mom, in addition to being a great artist, has a really creative mind when it comes to making unique things.  Take for instance this mirror pictured below.  

Instead of throwing out special dishes when they were replaced, became chipped or broken, she set them aside.  Eventually, the assortment contained plenty of color options and she cracked them into small pieces, placed around this vintage frame and made this mosaic mirror.  For added interest, the mirror is hung over the larger existing one to create a floating look in the guest bath.  Keep an eye out at yard sales and vintage shops for fun dishes, frames or any other pieces that you see repurposed potential in.

I am really looking forward to this whimsical event on Friday.  My friend and amazing photographer/graphic designer Brett Warren will showcase some new works from his Wooden Hearts collection.  Brett styles every detail of his shoots, from lighting to location to wardrobe.  He is the master of using vintage clothing and costumes to perfectly create and enhance the visualization of his concepts.  Always on the search for interesting pieces, his collection of fine vintage clothing is ever-expanding, perhaps because for fun he has been known to rent a suburban and venture across the country through the world's longest yard sale.  Brett, having recently moved back to Nashville after an internship in New York with Annie Leibovitz, has an amazing eye for capturing beauty and telling stories through the medium of photography.  Check out the event website here: www.curiousphotoshow.com and some of his previous inspired, dramatic work here: www.brettwarrenphotography.com.

Many of my friends actively volunteer with Mocha Club, an organization I've learned a lot about through their experience and involvement.  The view of this organization is that with a very small sacrifice, people can make a huge difference in the lives of others, specifically in areas of Africa.  The money saved by giving up two mochas a month, when donated to Mocha Club, can contribute greatly to helping others with various needs: child mothers and women at risk, those who need clean water, education, healthcare or orphan care.  So where does fashion enter this scenario?  Well, your $5 (or more if you're so inclined) donation at the door benefits Mocha Club and grants you access to an evening of great previewing and shopping.  Check out the invite above for more detailed info.  Visit www.mochaclub.org to learn about other ways you can become involved. 

Inside Scoop: Franklin's Best Yard Sale This Weekend

Who doesn't love a great yard sale? Well, I've got some inside scoop about the best one in town coming up this weekend. With decades of experience in the antiques and interior design fields, Franklin-based collectors Salli LaGrone and Tom Delcambre have a true gift for locating interesting things. Every few months they host a tag sale to flip merchandise and make space for their new finds.

You never know what you'll discover. They usually have everything from furniture to design books to vintage Christmas ornaments to fine china and glassware. Below are a few of my favorite things I've found at their previous sales.
