Steeplechase Fashion 2012

Attention Nashville ladies & gentlemen... there are just a few more days until Steeplechase on Saturday, May 12.  If you've not yet perfected your look for the races this weekend, read below and check out my segment on News Channel 2 today from The Cotton Mill in Green Hills where trends, hats, colors and all of the essential Steeplechase elements will be discussed.

A few thoughts for the ladies:

Matching is the most traditional look: having the perfectly colored hat to match the dress to match the shoes to match the bag, etc...  I think this is classic and never goes out of style in a great royal wedding kind of way.  Know, however, that the key to your perfect outfit is to complement rather than to always coordinate.  If it is your desire to be monochromatic, go for it!  Or if you want to mix it up, go for it!  Just don't limit yourself or decide against a piece because it doesn't match perfectly.  In those cases, introduce (or eliminate) a color or texture to reduce the risk of looking dated.

Color blocking is certainly the most current, obvious and fabulous trend now in fashion.  I challenge you to adopt an expanded view of color blocking, however.  Color blocking can exist within a single piece of clothing or by mixing various pieces.  To stay ahead of the curve, be original in your color combinations.  Be fearless to mix hot pink and red, navy and black, ecru and orange- whatever strikes your fancy.  Just be sure it looks obvious and intentional, not by accident or bad judgement.

You'll get a great look at the best Nashville has to offer in unique and current Steeplechase options in today's segment.  Take a look for yourself at The Cotton Mill in Grace's Plaza in Green Hills.

And a few thoughts for the men:

Nothing says Steeplechase fashion to me like Hermes neckwear.  This light blue horsebit bowtie goes quite nicely I think with the pattern of the Valentino sportcoat underneath.  It is subtle, handsome and perfectly appropriate for an afternoon of excitement at the races.

Don't overdo it.  As impeccably dressed as I feel you should be, this day is more about the ladies.  Avoid loud pastels that look neon- go instead for more soft, regal tones.   Seersucker is always appropriate, madras is very questionable.  Helpful hint: if you can find lilac seersucker, that's a nice alternative to the traditional blue that you will see all around. Billy Reid had a fantastic suit last year, so check there for sure.  Even if they're out of seersucker I'd place a high bet they will have the perfect thing for you.

Pocket squares, bowties and antique horse pins (remember this awesome piece? Christine Wallace Horse Pin) are among my favorite accessories for the big day, but my favorite accessory is actually unseen: CREED Millesime Imperial.  Over the years, it has become my favorite scent by far and is always the perfect addition to any of my wardrobe choices.  If you're new to CREED fragrances, also check out Neroli Sauvage which I must say is particularly nice when worn in warmer temperatures.  Available locally at Nordstrom.

Style Profile: Jaclyn Bush

The time has come for an original Style Profile feature, the first of this series in which an individual with remarkable style is profiled. For the inaugural Judson Knows Best Style Profile, one person immediately came to mind when I started to think of those who have influenced me and who possess the undeniable 'it' factor: Jaclyn Bush.

I've now known Jaclyn for five years, but it took only five seconds when we first met to realize her truly unique perspective on life and style, a knowledge of what's current, forthcoming and appropriate. Her understanding of proportion, fit and quality is unparalleled. She's known for gently pushing the envelope, showcasing new trends and pairings in ways that inspire others to fine tune or rediscover their own personal style. I would trust her forecasting of fashion above all others. Beautiful from the inside out, she never has to "try," rather she exudes a confidence and natural grace that is truly captivating. Her sense of style is ever-evolving and deepens with each life experience; a former single girl in the city on the cutting edge of fashion, she is now a married mother of two in Franklin.  I caught up with Jaclyn recently and was thrilled to interview her, passing along some of her thoughts to you all.

JKB: What makes you feel beautiful?
JB: A good dress. Two, maybe three hours at Fruition and a romantic dinner with Adam.

JKB: Who inspires you?
JB: Confident women like my mother, the most genuinly kind person I know.  She is secure within herself which allows her to celebrate the best in others, as we are all made in the image of our divine maker.

{Adam blouse with heavy embellishments, Paige Premium denim rolled above ankle, suede Cole Haan heels, large peacock pin created by family friend Sheri Mullican worn in hair, Granny's beads on wrist}

JKB: Favorite magazines?
JB: Bazaar, and don't laugh... Garden & Gun.

JKB: No laughter there. G&G is amazing- I never miss an issue. Favorite blogs or websites?
JB: apartmenttherapy.com, enjoyingthesmallthings.blogspot.com and your blog, of course.

{ J Crew blouse with gold horizontal lines, Karl Lagerfeld pants with drop waist band detailing from Saks Fifth Avenue worn rolled above ankle, suede Cole Haan heels, Granny's locket, watch and bracelets, vintage headband and earrings from personal collection}

JKB: Favorite item in your wardrobe?
JB: Orange plaid coat with fur collar. My aunt made it for my mom when she was my age; it gets cooler every year. I hope my girls fight over it someday.

JKB: What are you most passionate about?
JB: My family.

{No label oversized sweater from recent shopping outing, BCBG structured silk skirt worn above waist, BCBG patent red heels, vintage snake skin leather belt perfectly complementing blush ensemble}

JKB: Do you feel that Nashville is quick or slow to evolve, staying current with trends and styles?
JB: Quick. Many women in Nashville are daring and not afraid to be first, and the shops in town are in line with New York. Maybe not a full size run and not all colors shown, but that's the point. I've lost count how many fabulous stores this city supports.
Just look around this coffee shop and you will be inspired.

JKB: What is on your wish list at the moment?
JB: A Theory parka, brrrrr... it's cold.

JKB: Love it- Theory rules the wearable outerwear market in my opinion. Switching gears, what do you wish would disappear from existence?
JB: Cap sleeves.

JKB: Experimentation: like, love or loathe?
JB: Love. Experiementing can go really well or horribly wrong but live and learn, right?

 {Billy Reid button down with satin sleeves and asymmetrical button detailing layered over J Crew tee, distressed Seven For All Mankind A's denim, gold necklace from The Cotton Mill Collection}

JKB: What will you teach your daughters about fashion?
JB: Well, I don't know if they will care about fashion, but I want to teach them to have a positive self image and to appreciate their bodies. And if they do love clothes... Never pay full price, keep their favorites in the vault and learn to sew a little.

JKB: What a vault that will be! What would you like to tell the readers of this blog?
JB: Well, I would say freely compliment others. You never know what a person is struggling with internally, we are all battling something. A simple "you look hot" could relight a fire in a burned out person. And i would say "read on," as Judson brings all types of beauty to the surface.

JKB: Blushing. What's next for fashion?
JB: It's looking bright, my friend. I see a watermelon hue hoodie in your future.

JKB: What's next for you?
JB: Doing my best to raise lovely and kind girls. Trying to be a good wife, daughter, sister and friend.

Holiday Gift Ideas

I can't believe how quickly the holidays have arrived.  To kickstart the shopping season, I wanted to share a few items that could make excellent gifts for yourself or your loved ones.

For The Wall...

Art is always a great gift, especially when the proceeds go to a great cause.  Pictured below is one of many beautiful paintings by local artist Martha Case Nemer named It's Pear-fect.  This 16x20 oil for $275 makes a lovely addition to any wall.  Sold exclusively at The Cotton Mill during the holidays, 100% of the sale goes directly to The Melvin Case Christmas For Kids Foundation which has supplied over 10,000 toys and stuffed animals to needy children in the Nashville and Upper Cumberland areas of Tennessee through United Way, Upper Cumberland Region, Renewal House, Green Hills Rotary, Martha O'Bryan Center and McNeilly Center for Children.

For The Doll...

How many of you have a long list of girlfriends, cousins, sisters or coworkers to shop for, yet have no clue what to buy as a fun little item or where to start looking?  There is always a need for gifts in the $10-$30 range and you'd be surprised how many great online sites make it easy to find unique, high quality items at a great value.  My fabulous friend Linda introduced me to Neiman Marcus' online outlet site www.lastcall.com  Check that out for great discounts on designer items.  Tons of options at each click.

Another great site is www.GILT.com  I LOVE this site.  Free to join, after a quick registration you receive a daily list of the sales they offer. From super high end to cute and affordable, you can find something at a great value that you love every single day.  I can always find great pieces for the women in my life without breaking the bank. Take for example the ring pictured below.  By designer Kendra Scott, this would normally sell for around $75 or $100 but on Gilt it's only $35.  Cute, right?

For The Tall...

At 6 foot 3, I know how hard it is to shop for tall guys.  You can't imagine my frustration each time I fall in love with a shirt on the hanger, only to discover that the proportions are completely wrong for me.  I'm comfortable with the idea of alterations, as I have many of my things tailored to fit, but this can really only be done if the length is ok.  Usually if the length is good, that means that I've had to up the size so many times that the shoulder seams are down to my elbows.  It can be very frustrating.  That is why I am thrilled beyond belief when I find things that fit perfectly off the rack, but usually that means it's off either a Dolce & Gabbana or Marc Jacobs rack.  The most amazing sales specialist at Saks in New York introduced me to the shirt pictured below.  It's a soft, long, slim-fitting Marc Jacobs oxford with contrasting buttons. Could I ask for anything more?  I think not.  If you have a man in your life who needs a great shirt or any killer Marc Jacobs piece, call up Jesse at Saks and order one (or tons) asap.

For the Belles of the Ball...

It's no secret that my favorite and the best fragrance line I've ever discovered is CREED.  As CREED celebrates its 250th year in 2010, it is opening its archives to reveal historically significant letters, client orders and royal warrants from two and a half centuries of service.  Napoleon III granted CREED a royal warrant in 1855.  For Napoleon III, CREED made the fragrance Cuir de Russie, which means “Russian leather.”  While CREED Cuir de Russie is no longer available in the U.S., the fragrance Jasmin Imperatrice Eugenie, made for the wife of Napoleon III, is offered today.  I'll bet you can think of quite a few ladies in your life who would enjoy this special product.

And to complete the royal treatment this season, as always, they offer complimentary gift wrapping with every purchase at www.creedboutique.com.

Leggings & Tights

Leggings and tights.  Thoughts?  Some people hate, some people love.  I feel that deep down everyone loves them... or at least wants to.  If you can rock them and feel confident, there's never been a better time; there are so many different options and ways to wear them.  I've shown below two of my favorite looks, a casual legging and a dressy tights look.

These military inspired cargo leggings

The geometric tights below are from Milly's Fall 2010 Runway collection, worn with this killer silk/cotton rosette ruffle dress.  The dress, perfect for an award show or upcoming holiday party, is available locally at

Fashion: Colorblock Cute

I love colorblocking, especially when done in such a cute palette and proportion. This brand new Milly (www.millyny.com) dress is available locally at The Cotton Mill. I suggest keeping the legs and shoe dark to keep the focus on the dress, then pair with a large bag like this Tory Burch hobo.
